
Our Story
We are a diverse team of undergraduate, graduate, and post-baccalaureate researchers united by our passion for neuroscience and psychology. Under the leadership of Dr. Hernandez and Julian David-Drori, we each bring unique interests ranging from neuropsychological assessments, to brain functioning, and neurodiversity research. Our collaborative approach combines clinical expertise with innovative research methods, allowing us to gain hands-on experience while contributing to meaningful studies that advance our understanding of neurological conditions and human behavior.
Meet the Team

Executive Director
Dr. Ernesto Hernandez, PsyD.
Dr. Ernesto Hernandez brings over a decade of clinical expertise to his role as founding Executive Director of NIONY. As a dedicated neuropsychologist, he combines rigorous academic training with extensive practical experience to advance the field of neurological rehabilitation and patient care.
Dr. Hernandez completed his Doctor of Psychology (PsyD.) in Counseling Psychology at Turabo University, laying the foundation for his specialized career in neuropsychology. His postdoctoral training included a prestigious internship at the Neurobehavioral Institute of Miami, followed by a fellowship in Neuropsychology at the Florida Institute of Neurological Rehabilitation, where he honed his expertise in neurological assessment and treatment

Research Director
Julian M. David-Drori MS, EMT, BCCS
Julian M. David-Drori is a dedicated researcher with a Bachelor's degree from SUNY Geneseo, where he graduated in 2019 with a double major in History and Psychology. He furthered his education by earning a Master of Science in Neuroscience and Education from Columbia University's Teachers College. Currently, Julian serves as the founding Director of Research for NIONY and is the Principal Investigator (PI) for the Multiple Research Pathways (MRP) lab, where he leads innovative research initiatives. He is also an adjunct professor at Montclair State University

Becca Kaufman
​Becca Kaufman is a dedicated undergraduate student at Montclair State University with an advanced statistical and neuropsychological background. Becca is interested in pursuing a PhD in Clinical Psychology upon completion of her degree with a primary interest in neurodevelopment disorders. Becca enjoys spending time with her pets and family during her free time

Lab Manager
Wasayef Bsharat
Wasayef Bsharat is pursuing a B.A/M.A Psychology with triple minors in Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, and Arabic Studies. She has an extensive research background, serving as a Research Assistant in several psychology and neuropsychology labs. In addition to her research roles, she has held various leadership positions, including President of the Psychology Club and President of the school's chapter the National Society of Leadership and Success. Wasayef also brings a unique clinical background as a Crisis Counselor and Executive Function Coach, with previous experiences in neuropsychology sites. Her diverse interests extend beyond the lab; she enjoys exploring secret gardens observing wild animals in their natural habitats.

Alex is pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy with a double minor in Psychology and Cognitive Science, Their research interests are centered around the ethics of disabilities research, bringing insightful philosophical views to our lab work. As an outdoor enthusiast. Alex has a passion for kayaking and nature-related activities during their free time

Emmanuel Buitrago is pursuing a Psychology degree at Montclair State University with a focus on behavioral research methodology. His research interests include surveying people on readily observable behaviors and attitudes, contributing to various research initiatives within the lab. Emmanuel brings a unique cultural perspective to the team with his Colombian heritage.

Joseph Gambino
Joseph Gambino is a Psychology major with a minor in Justice Studies at Montclair State University. His research focuses on criminal justice psychology and the experiences of disabled individuals within the legal system, seeking to improve conditions through psychological principles. Coming from a large Italian family as one of five children, Joseph maintains an active lifestyle with a passion for sports and fitness.

Riya Savalia is pursuing her degree in Psychology at Montclair State University. Her research interests center on gaining comprehensive experience in research methodology and understanding the intricate process of conducting ethical research. As a twin, Riya brings unique personal insight to her research work.

Nikolas Falco is pursuing a degree in exercise science and has a keen interest in brain function and learning. His research focuses on brain biology, bringing a physiological perspective to our lab's work. Known for his love of spicy food, Nikolas brings enthusiasm to both his research and everyday activities

Alexis Narine is a Psychology major pursuing triple minors in Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, and Philosophy. Her research interests include brain function, neuropsychology, and neurodiversity, with a focus on helping individuals with various disorders. She currently works in a cerebral lateralization lab and interns at the Kessler Foundation studying stroke patients.

Toni Dornhard is pursuing a double major in Philosophy and Classics with minors in Cognitive Science, Psychology, and Ancient Mediterranean Civilization. Her research interests center around the ethical aspects of the lab's work, ensuring high standards in research practices. Outside of academics, Toni enjoys crocheting and knitting.

Brianna Valdivieso is pursuing dual studies in Psychology and Visual Arts through the Honors EDGE program. Her research interests center on gaining practical experience in psychological research methodology. Coming from a unique family dynamic, Brianna is a twin and also has a pair of twin sisters.
